In 2023, a number of media houses were sanctioned, two foreign journalists expelled and several local media professionals threatened.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">Also, the section of the population that has bought into the patriotism mantra of the military government has been allowed a large latitude to go after suspected \u201cunpatriotic\u201d journalists, activists and media outlets with impunity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">More ominously, the country passed a law in November that allows the government to appoint the head of the media regulatory authority and the deputy.
