Thirteen (13) young journalists have benefitted from the 2022 edition of the Next Generation Investigative Journalism Fellowship (NGIJ).
The Fellows, made up of seven females and six males, were selected from Liberia, Ghana and Sierra Leone.
As part of activities to close the second edition of the Fellowship after a successful training, the MFWA is organizing a forum on the theme: Improving public-sector accountability – the role of Investigative Journalism.
The forum will bring together key stakeholders in investigative journalism and anti-corruption drawn from government institutions, diplomatic corps, civil society, academia and the media to discuss the role investigative journalism can play in improving public sector accountability. The event will also be used to certify the second cohort which has successfully gone through the five months of training and mentorship. The Fellows will share experiences, key learnings and takeaways from the training programme with participants at the event.

The comprehensive five-month Fellowship which started in August hosted the Fellows in Ghana with mentorship from Fact-Check Ghana and The Fourth Estate, both being MFWA’s public interest and accountability journalism projects overseen by seasoned journalists. Beneficiaries received intensive practical training and support which enabled them to conduct critical, high-quality, fact-based and in-depth reporting towards improving lives and promoting good governance through excellent journalism.
The MFWA launched the maiden edition of the NGIJ in 2021 with a cohort of 10 young journalists from Ghana. This report captures a synopsis of some of the compelling stories produced and published by the first Cohort of Fellows holding authorities to account in the provision of basic amenities such as water, health facilities etc.
This year’s Fellowship is supported by the United States Embassy in Ghana and the Dutch Foreign Ministry (through the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands).
