The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has been awarded a grant by the Dutch Foreign Ministry (through the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ghana) for a one-year project titled: Improving the safety and use of social media for female politicians in Ghana.
The Project aims to strengthen the capacity of female politicians across Ghana in using digital tools to increase their visibility, disseminate their messages and interact with the electorate; and stay safe online. It also seeks to increase public knowledge about online gender-based violence (OGBV) and their impact, while engaging relevant institutions in redressing OGBV cases.
Project objective
Specifically, the project seeks:
- To provide scientific data on the scope of OGBV issues against female politicians in Ghana
- To increase the knowledge of at least 200 female politicians across Ghana in accessing and using social media and other digital tools to improve their visibility, project their campaign messages and engage more with their supporters and constituents
- To increase responsiveness of stakeholders such as the Cyber Security Authority, Data Protection Commission, Ministry of Gender and Social Protection, Ministry of Communication and Digitalisation, political parties, Women’s Rights Groups and activists, media etc on issues of cyber-harassment and other forms of online abuse against women
- To contribute to reducing incidents of OGBV in Ghana by at least 20 percent
Purpose/Scope of Consultancy Assignment
In line with the first objective, the MFWA is looking for a consultant to conduct a baseline study on issues of Online Gender Based Violence (OGBV) against female politicians in Ghana.
The selected consultant will map out the OGBV issues affecting female politicians in Ghana and make recommendations on how various stakeholders can work together to increase the responsiveness of authorities in addressing OGBV and reduce OGBV cases in Ghana. The report on the study will also inform training workshops to be held under the project, as well as sensitisation and engagements with relevant stakeholders on OGBV in Ghana.
Timelines
The consultant will be engaged for 20 working days (January 26 – February February 27, 2024)
